Art Fiaci at Museo del Arte Moderno
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
3 May – 18 June 2024
The first edition of the International Contemporary Art Fair (FIACI) took place from May 3 to June 18, 2024, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The event featured over 80 local and international artists showcasing Latin American art, with a rich programme of exhibitions. As part of the fair, Swiss artist Simon Berger participated in the group exhibition ‘Linking Worlds’ at the Museum of Modern Art. This exhibition highlighted revolutionary artistic expressions like NFT and performance art through immersive works. FIACI 2024 was a significant event for the Latin American art world, turning Santo Domingo into a hub of creativity and artistic expression. The fair features both established and emerging artists whose works challenge conventions and explore the intersections of past, present, and future. The event also honored the legacy of Dominican artists who have made a lasting impact on the country’s art history. Berger’s contribution to the exhibition through a performance and three exhibited portraits. It honored the three Mirabal sisters, who had resisted the Trujillo dictatorship. After years of political activism, arrests, and imprisonment, they were brutally murdered by the regime, which initially tried to cover up their deaths. Today, the Mirabal sisters are global symbols of the fight against dictatorship and violence against women. Simon Berger’s works pay tribute to the sisters while also addressing the broader issue of violence against women. In his artwork, he used AI to merge photographs and sculptures of the sisters, slightly anonymizing their likenesses. The works therefore honor not only the Mirabal sisters but also all women who have suffered violence.
